Join our team

Join us in supporting trade and tourism in central Aotearoa New Zealand. Located on the north end of Wellington’s CBD waterfront, we’re New Zealand’s busiest port by ship movements, and every day is different.  We offer a variety of great career opportunities including cargo handlers, logistics managers, crane drivers, and pilots as well as corporate jobs in communications, finance, and Digital Technology. Whatever the role, we offer opportunities for our people to upskill and progress their careers.

Our Story - Our People

Thanks for your interest in joining the CentrePort team. Below is an overview of the steps in our recruitment process. The steps may differ depending on the role you are applying for, but we’ll keep you informed every step of the way.+

We look after our customers and our people. We have a good track record in keeping our people safe from injury, and we work to look after the whole person through our wellbeing programme which includes an onsite gym and regular all-staff lunch shouts.

And we’re not just about ships coming and going — at CentrePort we value and foster our deep connection with the local community, our relationship with mana whenua and our responsibility as a guardian or kaitiaki of the harbour. We have a genuine focus on sustainability and consider the environmental impact of all that we do.

We offer a variety of great career opportunities in a range of roles including cargo handlers, logistics managers, crane drivers, and pilots as well as corporate jobs in communications, finance, IT and other areas.  Whatever the role, we offer lots of opportunities for our people to upskill and progress their careers.

You’ll need to complete an online application which includes providing your contact details, the types of roles you are interested in, remuneration expectations, criminal and medical history and your right to work in NZ.

Cover letter

A good cover letter will highlight your most relevant skills and qualifications for the role. This is a good way to show us what you want us to know about you and why you are the best person for the job.

Curriculum Vitae

Make sure your CV is up to date. It should include details of your previous roles including the dates you were employed and a summary of responsibilities and key achievements. And remember to include your contact details and watch out for those typos!

Once we receive your application, you’ll get an email confirmation. We’ll then get back to you via phone or email once we’ve completed our shortlisting process. This can sometimes take a couple of weeks.

Phone screening

If we like what we see in your application, then we may call you to discuss it and the role in more detail.

Interview

If you’re selected to be interviewed, you’ll speak to a panel of two or three people. The interview will take approximately one hour including time allocated for you to ask questions. We may have a second interview, or a chat over coffee. This way you can get a second look at us and ask any additional questions, and so can we.

After the interview

If you are selected as the preferred candidate after the interview, we’ll be in touch to let you know what happens next. For candidates who are unsuccessful, we’ll call you as soon as we can, to provide you with feedback.

Psychometric assessments

You may be asked to complete ability assessments and/or personality profiling. We use an external organisation for this. These are completed online at a time that suits you.

If you are our preferred candidate, we’ll provide you with a conditional offer. This lets you know we want you on board, subject to a number of pre-employment checks, which are outlined below. We’ll  ask for your consent before we complete these

Pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol assessment

We’re committed to health and safety. We are an alcohol and drug free workplace and pre-employment testing is mandatory.

Reference checking

We’ll do reference checks near the end of the process. We typically contact two managers, one current and one who you’ve reported to in the past.

We will contact you as soon as the pre-employment checks have been completed at this stage, we’ll confirm a mutually convenient start date and confirm this in writing. We’ll provide you with some information about your start date and your induction process.
