Introducing Te Aumihi - Our New Marine Base

20 October 2025

CentrePort staff gathered in the early hours at InterIsland Wharf for a formal blessing of our new whare, led by members of Taranaki Whanui. Our Chief Executive Anthony Delaney unveiled the name of the base as 'Te Aumihi'.

The name Te Aumihi was gifted to us through our enduring relationship with Taranaki Whanui, and it reflects the important role that our Marine Team play in welcoming and farewelling ships within our harbour. 'Aumihi' is associated with the act of welcoming or greeting others, and the term 'au' is a metaphor for our ocean, its currents, and the wake of ships on the water.

Te Aumihi will provide much better amenities for our Marine Team. These buildings have journeyed across our harbour via barge from the Makers Fabrication workshop in Petone, and Makers have done a great job transforming the base modules into a welcoming home. Our Marine Team now have proper offices, living spaces, a full kitchen, bedrooms, and a deck (with some pretty sweet views as well).

One of the most distinctive features of Te Aumihi is the handcrafted name plate at the front. This special piece of woodwork was made from 60-year-old timber which was recovered from beneath InterIsland wharf during structural works. This unique nameplate symbolises the lifting of the old bones from beneath the wharf, to give name and life to the new whare above.
